Banding 101- The Ultimate GUIDE!!

Hair BANDING  101:

Help your child grow Longer healthier Hair now!

What is BANDING??

Banding, is the simple hair-style I have used on my daughter's hair for years to Protect her hair, Grow her hair to her waist by the age of 4, and to make my life easy!!

I compare it to the old tradition of African thread in the hair, I remember when at school, many African girls had their hair in thread, and it really grew LONG, now I understand why!

 Traditional Hair Threading

One mother I met at a hair show explained to me she uses the thread, to Stretch and dry her girls' hair instead of a blow dryer!
Gorgeous threaded hair on a 2 year old, hair mosturised with ROOT2TiP Nourish, Hydrate & Shine Me Butter!

I use the bands to do the same thing on my dd's hair.

Why is BANDING so good for the hair??
  • It allows you to stretch the hair without heat ;)
  • Its a great FUN protective style for kids
  • Kid's love the stress-free style
  • It will not stress or thin the child's hair line
  • It's less stressful than corn-rowing the hair
  • It allows the hair to GROW
  • It can last for 2-3 weeks at a time!
  • You can still moisturise the hair in between the style
  • You can make the bands from a pair of tights and cut the legs into metal free bands!
  • It looks great and different!

Banding - How to do it??

1) Start on clean conditioned hair.

2) Prep the hair with a effective leave-in conditioner like Kinki Coili Kurli Honey-rain Juice, follow this with a heavy moisturising cream, like Kinki Coili Kurli Twurling Batter or Nourish Hydrate & Shine Me hair Butter, www.root2tip.com.

GREAT Natural Detangler/1st step Leave-in conditioner!

3) Its important to ensure you moisturise the hair PROPERLY prior to banding.
The best selling butter from Root2Tip!

4) Part you hair from ear to ear in the middle of your head, and clip half away.

5) Starting at the back, depending on how big you want your sections, around 3cm up part the hair again from ear to ear,

 6) Part the hair vertically so you have a box sectioned off.

7) Brush the hair gently so its smooth and tangle free, starting at the base of the hair, apply a band, then 1 cm down, apply another band, not too tightly, as though doing a pony-tail
continue doing this down the section of the hair until you reach the end of the hair, bend the tip of the hair under to protect it and apply a final band around it gently.

8) Ensure the ends of the hair get an extra smothering of moisturiser, they get dry the quickest!

9) Continue to section off hair and band each section.  You can even twist the hair first and then band it, the style will last even longer this way.

10) Choose fun coloured tights to make your bands with, or school uniform colours during term-time.

About to wash unbanded hair!
Banding is great for active kids!

How can I grow my child's hair LONGER!!

Can My child GROW LONG HAIR??

Do you have to be mixed to have LONG hair??

Is Long hair determined by GENES??

Natural hair-care to nurture your child's hair:  www.root2tip.com

What happens between the ages 0-4 with our kids hair?

Age 0:

your baby is a born with a thick head of hair -  that hair should be left alone, no bobbles and no bands!

Age 1-2:

ok, so the hair has started to grow and changes in texture, still, it's too fragile for corn-rows, it should be left alone!  I see hair being pulled into tight bands that damages hair!!  Leave it free!!

Age 2-3:

Kids are now sporting extensions, not all but I do see many with heavy extensions put in too fragile and weak hair- Why??  Most of the time its not even because a parent is trying to grow their child's hair its more to do with convenience/

Age 4+:

Many children I see have collar-bone or shoulder length hair, rarely do I see kids with LONG hair down their backs.

This is not because it wont grow, but unfortunately down to the way we as parents, guardians or hairdressers handle and nurture it!!

Hair grows on average 6 inches a year!  is your child seeing anywhere near that growth??

Healthy Afro hair growth

Tips for healthy hair growth:

Wash your childs hair regularly, use a conditioner, not shampoo, the more moisture the better, the hair will still be clean!!

Adopt a low-manipulation style, do not comb or brush the hair daily, in fact only comb the hair on wash days,

Invest in your child's hair to see the results they will hopefully thank-you for!!  ;)

What is Deep conditioning?...and why your Childs hair needs it to GROW?

DC'ing your child's hair to maintain moisture, health and LENGTH!!

DC= Deep Condition!

Apply your deep conditioner generously so every hair is coated!

If you have a child with textured/curly/afro hair, then please realise and remember this really short mantra...

Conditioner is a CURLS Best Friend!  :)

What is DEEP CONDITIONING?

Basically, its when you leave a heavy treatment type conditioner in your hair for a couple of hours or apply a plastic cap to the head and sit under a dryer or steamer with the conditioner in!

Its a deeper type of conditioning treatment.  texture hair craves this type of treatment.

Caution ;(

Without conditioning your child's hair, you are leaving their hair, free to get excessively dry, brittle and eventually split-ends and breakage.

After having washed your child's hair, apply your Deep conditioner treatment to the length of your child's strands, ensure that all hairs are covered or rather SLATHERED! with your Deep conditioning treatment of choice.

Cover the head with a plastic cap or plastic bag if that's what you have to hand, and allow body heat or a hooded dryer or steamer to heat up the hair.

Leave it on for a couple of hours, I have left it on overnight on my DD's hair and it has all night to penetrate into the hair and moisturise it INTERNALLY!

Once complete, rinse away and moisturise and allow to air-dry!

Or Stretch blow-dry when your in a rush!

If you incorporate a regular deep conditioning session into your child's weekly haircare routine, you will notice the great impact it has on the health and length of your child's hair!

Washing Your childs Curly/Afro Hair!

Shampooing your child's hair - the tangle-free way ;)

In the last post I said the next post would be on Air-drying or how I blow-dry my DD's hair.

DD = dear daughter (it's forum abreviation please remember!)

Before we get on to that, lets go through my quick Hair washing tips!

Its Sulfate-free!  I dilute this in a separate bottle with a nozzle!
This smells devine!

My shampoo of choice most recently has been Dr Organics, Honey Manuka Shampoo, (above) its sulfate free and relatively mild, I will still dilute it further prior to washing my dd's hair with it.  You can purchase the Dr Organics shampoo and conditioner from your local Holland & Barret store.

Washing the hair...

I will only wash my dd's hair in 4 braids, attempting to wash her dense hair in any other way is 'begging for tangles!

Technique:

  1. Loosely braid the hair if its long enough in 4 plaits or you can use hair bands to hold the 4 sections separate.
  2. Apply your shampoo (diluted) to the scalp mainly, not much is needed.  I only use natural products by 'KinkiCoiliCurly' in my dd's hair so their is never any crazy product build-up requiring a heavy shampoo session.
  3. Massage the scalp gently, no nails! then rinse away.
  4. If the hair itself needs attention then apply a bit of shampoo to the hair directly, squeeze down the plait then rinse away properly.
  5. Follow up with your DEEP Conditioner...this step is even more significant than the hair-washing itself!
Remember- only wash the hair if it has been untangled first!  shampoo and tangled hair = KNOT CENTRAL!

CONDITIONER is a CURL'S BEST FRIEND :)
